How do I cite an Online Video in APA Style?

Answer

YouTube Video

Use the name of the person who uploaded the video as the author, so the work is easier to find. If the author’s name is the same as the username, you can omit the [Username]. See also APA Manual, 7th ed. section 10.12, ex. 90, section 9.8 for citing usernames.

Author's Last Name, Author's First Initial, or Group who uploaded the video. [Username]. (Year, Month Date). Title of the video [File Type]. Streaming Service. URL
Examples:
Efron, Z. (2019, November 26). Dude perfect takes over gym time: Gym time w/ Zac Efron [Video]. YouTube. https://youtu.be/lLSDe9Oyk9Q
Fogarty, M. [Grammar Girl]. (2010, November 5). How to use single quotation marks [Video]. YouTube. https://youtu.be/0Xih0b8vWk0

Video from a Database

LSSC's video databases are streaming services. The content in many cases is unique to the database, therefore using the database name is acceptable. See also APA Manual, 7th ed. sect. 10.12, ex. 84

Author’s Last Name, Author’s first initial. (Author’s title). (Date). Title of the film [File type]. Streaming Service or Production Company.
Example:
Burns, K. (Producer). (2012). The great plow up [Video]. Films on Demand.

TED Talk

If the TEDTalk comes from TED’s website, use the name of the speaker as the author. If the TED Talk is presented by someone else, list the owner of the account as the author. See also APA Manual, 7th ed. sect. 10.12, ex. 88.

Author's Last Name, Author's First Initial of the speaker or Owner. (Year, Month Date). Title of the talk [File Type]. Streaming Service. URL
