How do I cite a newspaper article in MLA Style?

Answer

Print Newspaper Articles

To cite print newspaper articles in MLA style you need the elements below. Print articles are ones where you are holding the newspaper in your hand.

  • If the city is included in the title of the newspaper, include it in brackets after the title.
  • When a newspaper includes the edition, add the edition with a comma after the title of the source (late ed.,).
  • If an element is missing, skip it.

Author's last name, first name. “Title of Article.” Title of Source, Date of publication (day month year), page number(s).

For an article from a database, add the database information after citing the print article. Use the permalink or stable url provided by the database. See also MLA Handbook, 9th edition p. 321.
