How do I format dates in APA style?

Answer

In your reference entries, dates should always be the second element of the reference and they should be enclosed in parenthesis after the author’s name, follow with a period (APA sec. 9.13). The year always comes first, as shown below.

  • Year only: (2020)
  • Complete date: (2020, September 12)
  • Month/Year: (2020, September)
  • Two Months: (2020, September/October)
  • Season: (2020, Spring/Summer)

On cover pages, the due date should be written in traditional format, like this: September 13, 2022.
