Plays can be published in many formats and mediums; the most common are as a stand-alone-book, as part of an anthology, or on a website.

To cite plays in-text use the author's name, give the page number first, followed by other identifying information (such as act or scene numbers. Separate the page number from the other information with a semi-colon.

(Gilbert 17; act 2).

To cite a play that doesn't use page numbers, but uses acts cite the acts.

(Ibsen act 2).

To cite short plays with one act, cite the page numbers if available.
