In-text citations begin with the first element listed in the corresponding entry on the Works Cited page.

In-Text Citations in APA

In-text citations in APA style use specific citation rules depending on the number of authors for the source and whether you are paraphrasing or quoting source material.

When you paraphrase your source material, you do not need to include a page number in the citation. If you are using a direct quote you do need to include a page number or paragraph number for the location of the quote in the source. 

 

In-Text Citation for Sources with One Author

Reference example:
Hayashi, M. C. (n.d.). Gender bias in the workplace. LinkedIn. https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/gender-bias-workplace-mary-hayashi/

 

Parenthetical in-text citation that goes at the end of the sentence:

Format: (Last Name, n.d., page or paragraph number).

(Smith, n.d., p. 6). or (Jones, n.d., para. 3).

Example:

"Gender bias in the workplace is a pervasive issue that affects many individuals" (Hayashi, n.d., para. 1).

 

or

 

Signal Phrase at the beginning of the sentence:

Format: According to Last Name (year),...(page or paragraph number). 

Example:

According to Hayashi (n.d.), "gender bias in the workplace is a pervasive issue that affects many individuals" (para. 1).
