In-text citations begin with the first element listed in the corresponding entry on the Works Cited page.
In-Text Citations in APA
In-text citations in APA style use specific citation rules depending on the number of authors for the source and whether you are paraphrasing or quoting source material.
When you paraphrase your source material, you do not need to include a page number in the citation. If you are using a direct quote you do need to include a page number or paragraph number for the location of the quote in the source.
In-Text Citation for Sources with Three or More Authors
Reference example:
Mossine, V.V., Mawhinney, T.P., & Giovannucci, E.L. (n.d.). Dried fruit intake and cancer: A systematic review of observational studies.
Advances in Nutrition 11(2), 237-250.
https://doi.org/10.1093/advances/nmz085
Always use the first name listed in the reference in your in-text citation.
Parenthetical in-text citation that goes at the end of the sentence:
Format: (Last Name et al., n.d., page or paragraph number).
Example:
"Cancer is the second leading cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide" (Mossine et al., n.d., p. 237).
or
Signal Phrase at the beginning of the sentence:
Format: According to Last Name et al. (n.d.),...(page or paragraph number).
Example:
According to Mossine et al. (n.d.), "cancer is the second leading cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide" (para. 2).
