How do I format the location of my source (such as URLs and DOIs) in MLA style?

Answer

The location in a book or periodical is usually a page number (preceded by p.) or a range of pages (preceded by pp.). For websites or databases locations can also include URLs, permalinks, or DOIs. On a DVD set the location may be disc number.

In MLA  Handbook 9th edition:

  • If the DOI in the source is not preceded by http:// or https://, begin the DOI entry with https://doi.org/
  • If a URL offers a permalink, use it instead of the URL
  • Include a URL in full form from the browser, unless you don't want it hyperlinked then omit the http:// or https://.

(See MLA Handbook, 9th edition: Sections 5.5.85 - 5.5.99 for complete rules)
