How do I create an in-text citation if there are no page numbers in MLA?

Answer

For Sources without a Page Number

For some sources, especially websites and other sources in electronic format, the page number will be missing. Omit the page number from your parenthetical reference when:

  • the print source does not use page numbers
  • the website source does not use page numbers
  • the electronic version doesn't display page numbers from the print version of the source (like in a .PDF file)
  • using a print-out of the source (never use the print out page numbers)

In the in-text citation (either a signal phrase or a parenthetical citation), use the first element of the citation from your Works Cited page.
