How do I format the title page and the headings for APA & MLA papers?

Answer

APA

APA papers require cover sheets. On the top half of the cover sheet center the FULL title of your paper in bold font. Skip a few lines and on separate lines center the following information:

  • the student's name
  • the name of the school and program
  • the name of the course
  • the professor's name
  • the due date of the paper

MLA

MLA papers only require a heading on the first page with identifying information for the student and the paper. This is not to be confused with a header which is the text that goes on the top margin of every page.

The heading should start on the left side of the paper on the first line. It includes:

  • the student's name
  • the professor's name
  • the name of the course
  • the due date of the paper

Each should be on a separate line with a double space between each. The title of the paper goes in the center of the 5th line with no spaces between the heading and the title. In an MLA paper, the title is not bolded.
