How do I set up an MLA paper in Microsoft Word on a Mac?

Answer

Open Microsoft Word and select a blank Microsoft Word document.

Font

  1. Click on the normal template box on your Home ribbon
  2. Select modify
  3. Select Times New Roman font and make the size 12

Margins and Spacing

  1. Click on the Layout tab on the menu bar
  2. Choose Margins
  3. Choose the Normal template which has one-inch margins all around
  4. Go back to the Home tab on the menu bar
  5. Go to the spacing button on the Home ribbon and set the spacing to 2.0 or double.

Header

  1. Start by double-clicking the top inch of the document
  2. Go to the Home tab, then choose the align-right button
  3. Type your last name
  4. Go to the Header & Footer tab
  5. Click page number drop-down button, then click page number again
  6. Insert the page number
  7. Double-click in the body section of the paper to start your paper

     

Body of Paper

Make sure the paragraphs are double-spaced and that the first line of each paragraph is indented by 1/2 inch

Works Cited

  1. At the end of the document, go to the Insert tab
  2. Click pages
  3. Then insert a Blank page. You can also use a keyboard shortcut by pressing and holding the command key and hitting enter.
  4. Type the title Works Cited in the center of the first line of the page
  5. Use the ruler bar to set up your hanging indent. If the ruler is not visible, click the View tab and select ruler.

When you save the document, save it to your computer and not to OneDrive. If you save it to OneDrive, when you upload it to Canvas the teacher won't be able to see it.
