How do I solve a density problem?

Math, Chemistry, and Biology students need to know this.

Answer

  1. Write down the known information from the problem (i.e. what is given). Two of the following three pieces of information will be given:
    1. Density = d
    2. Mass = m
    3. Volume = v
  2. Write down the density equation: d = m/v (density = mass/volume).
  3. HINT: rearranging the density equation to solve for the unknown may make it easier to solve.
    1. If d is the unknown, use d = m/v
    2. If m is the unknown, use m = dv
    3. If v is the unknown, use v = m/d
  4. Replace two of the variables in the equation with the given information.
  5. Solve for the unknown variable (the information not given in the problem).
