How do I cite a magazine article in MLA Style?

Answer

Print Magazine Articles

To cite print magazine articles in MLA style you need the elements below. Print articles are ones where you are holding the magazine in your hand. If an element is missing, skip it. See also MLA Handbook, 9th edition p. 323.

Author's last name, first name. “Title of Article.” Title of Magazine, vol. # (volume number, if available), no. # (issue number, if available), date of publication (day month year), page number(s).
Examples:
Sager, Mike. “Dinosaur Cowboy.” Smithsonian, vol. 48, no. 4, July-Aug. 2017, pp. 52-63.
Pasachoff, Jay M. “The Great Solar Eclipse of 2017.” Scientific American, vol. 317, no.2, Aug. 2017, pp. 54-61.
For magazine articles with no author, start the citation with the title of the article in quotes.
“Cool Beans.” Parents, Aug. 2017, p. 112.

Magazine Articles from Databases

For an article from a database, add the database information after citing the print article. Use the permalink or stable url provided by the database. See also MLA Handbook, 9th edition p. 325.

Author's last name, first name. “Title of Article.” Title of Magazine, vol. # (volume number, if available), no. # (issue number, if available), date of publication (day month year), page number(s). Name of Database, URL (permalink without the http://). Accessed day month year.
Lansky, Sam. “Almost Everybody's Got Talent.” Time, vol. 184, no. 11, 22 Sept. 2014, p. 67. Academic Search Complete, db14.linccweb.org/login?url=http://search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&db=a9h&AN=98169691&site=ehost-live. Accessed 18 Aug. 2017.

Magazine Articles Online

For online articles, outside of databases, cite the available elements. Most of these will not have volume and issue numbers. See also MLA Handbook, 9th edition p. 324.

Author's last name, first name. “Title of Article.” Title of Magazine, date of publication (day month year), URL (without the http:// unless it's hyperlinked). Accessed day month year.
